The movie, The Way Back, dramatizes the purported escape of a group of prisoners from a Siberian gulag on foot to freedom in India during World War II. With their approximate route as a guide to our path, we journey from Moscow to Lake Baikal, Siberia; to Mongolia; through Beijing and Xian, China; across the deserts of western China; through Tibet; across the Himalayas; to Nepal and India; ending up in Kolkata, the city where they finally found freedom.

But, instead of scrounging for food, shelter and water, on our 'quest' we sample the local cuisine and stay with local people. There is a ship ride, shoreside camp and stay in a cottage with a Russian grandmother on Lake Baikal. We stay in gers with Mongolians, ride camels into the dunes of the Chinese Gobi desert and camp under the stars, do part of the hike to Everest Base Camp, river raft through the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal and stay in a Bhutanese monastery with monks in the place in India where Buddha was said to have found Nirvana. We explore Tibet, see the Terracotta Warriors, and visit the ancient cities of Kathmandu, Lhasa and Varanasi, and the cosmopolitan, but nonetheless ancient, cities of Beijing, Kolkata, and Moscow.

We feel that this is the most exciting adventure trip available on the market. Not only does it hit the most intriguing places, it crosses the most fascinating cultures and environments from the Russian taiga to the tropical lowlands of the Indian subcontinent. And we can even hunt for clues to prove or disprove whether the journey actually took place.

Sounds like a lot right? Well the trip is 45 days, but it can be done in 3 parts. We call it a 'quest series' and it's divided into a Moscow to Beijing leg (20 days), a Beijing to Kathmandu leg (18 days), and a Kathmandu to Kolkata leg (12 days).
